reflections on living & dying

Hello dear friend,

A few days ago, my step-father passed away after living with terminal cancer for 4 years. He died within hours of the venerable Zen Buddhist monk and beloved teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. Nearly everyday now on my social media, I learn of the death of one or more people within my relatively small community of family, friends, neighbors and workmates.

The Indianapolis-based insurance company OneAmerica recently reported that death rates from mid-2021 on are up a stunning 40% from pre-pandemic levels among working-age people 18 to 64. According to the CEO Scott Davidson, “We are seeing, right now, the highest death rates we have seen in the history of the business.” The majority died of causes other than COVID. CDC Data shows the same trend, listing a 40% rise nationwide in excess deaths among 18 to 49-year-olds.

We are clearly in the midst of a profound transition for all species on earth. This has touched each of us in some way, and I wonder - Rather than turning away, how can I be present to death in a way that makes living more precious and deepens my connection with Spirit?

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. ~ Khalil Gibran
In the shamanic worldview, life and death are woven together and are part of an inseparable whole. Shamanic practitioners learn to move their consciousness at will between the world of the seen and the world of the unseen. This training helps us to step into a whole new relationship with life - and a new relationship with death.

I invite you to reflect and be supported as we gather in sacred circle for the New Moon Ceremony ~ Native Flute Meditation and Drum Journey on ZOOM coming up on Monday, January 31, 2021 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Donations accepted in the spirit of sacred reciprocity. Your gift will be shared with the Lakota People’s Law Project to assist indigenous communities.

Gather in virtual Sacred Circle at dusk, when the veils between worlds are thinnest, to embrace the new moon with reflection, renewal and seeding new intentions for the new year.

Let go of everyday concerns and rest in peaceful meditation to the soothing sounds of Native American Flute music played live.

Journey with the drum to the unseen realms to connect with compassionate guardian spirits for healing and guidance through direct revelation.

To protect our sacred space, only those who have signed up will be admitted.

To truly live, we must embrace the natural cycles of life and death with courage and compassion.

Hugs and blessings,

Sonya
