Hello Music Lover!

"Expert performers" are those individuals, possessing both experience and superior skill, who tend to win Nobel Prizes or international chess competitions or Olympic medals.

Anders Ericsson writes in his Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance (2006) that rather than mere experience or even raw talent, it is dedicated, slogging, generally solitary exertion - repeatedly practicing the most difficult tasks - that leads to first-rate performance. And it should never get easier; if it does, you are coasting, not improving. Ericsson calls this exertion "deliberate practice," by which he means the kind of practice we hate, the kind that leads to failure and hair-pulling and fist-pounding.

We like to practice what we know, stretching out in the warm bath of familiarity rather than stretching our skills. Those who overcome that tendency are the real high performers.

So, jolt yourself off that comfy sofa and seek some inspiration at your local music venues. You may be lucky enough to hear some amazing musicians who are continually striving to break through the boundaries of their own ability.

The weather is sunny and beautiful here on the Coastside in Half Moon Bay! Now is the time to come hang out in my neighborhood and enjoy some grooves.

P.S. One evening a young couple got lost on the way to a concert in New York City. Noticing a street musician playing on the corner, they stopped and asked, "How do we get to Carnegie Hall?" The musician answered, "Practice!"  If you are wondering, "How do I get off this list," don't ask a musician!
