Happy Holidays!
As we wrap up the year and look ahead toward 2008, this question is worth considering -- If you had more money than you could ever spend and you could do anything you wanted or nothing at all, what would your life look like?

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld made a reported $255 million for the syndication of Seinfeld alone and appears almost annually on Forbes'  list of richest celebrities. Yet he admits to being somewhat lost after the 1998 finale of his television show.

"I got tired of being treated like a precious little egg on a pillow...I missed people yelling at me and treating me like a regular guy."
-- Jerry Seinfeld, Time Magazine, October 8, 2007

For a few months after his show went off the air, he did nothing much besides playing pool every afternoon at the billiards hall. With every career option still open to him, he did some soul-searching and came to the conclusion that the applause of a few hundred people is worth more than the adulation of millions. Longing for the "griminess of the stand-up world," he decided to return to where he started -- being a stand-up comic.

"Doing my act and working on that -- that's my job. To actually do your creative thing right in front of an audience and have them judge it right there -- that's exciting."
-- Jerry Seinfeld, Time Magazine, October 8, 2007

Aren't we often so busy striving for what's next that we fail to appreciate the richness in our everyday lives? As a full-time performing musician, I sometimes feel glamorous and adored. But more often than not, I play music in cacophonous public bars, as background accompaniment to the clatter of diners, or in the service of a wedding celebration.  Not exactly ideal settings for inspired performances!

Nonetheless, playing music is what I love to do. I wouldn't trade the "griminess" of it for anything. This holiday season, I am grateful to be reminded once again that my life as it looks now -- This is the good stuff!

No matter where I play, you'll find me blowing my heart out on the sax.

P.S.  Is that little voice in your head shouting, "Gratitude, Schmatitude!"  Your cynicism is shared by French writer Francois de La Rochefoucauld who believes that in most of mankind, gratitude is merely a secret hope of further favors. If you are not at all grateful that this newsletter dropped in your Inbox and you wish to be Removed from the list, Reply with these words by Russian leader Joseph Stalin: "Gratitude is a sickness suffered by dogs."
