Hello Music Lover!

Remember the first time you ever performed or spoke in public?

I was 10 years old playing the saxophone at my 5th grade band concert in Ralston, Nebraska.  The band director accompanied me on guitar while I performed my instrumental version of "Proud Mary."

I was terrified!  My palms were sweaty, and my face felt hot.  My mouth dried up so much that I could hardly blow.  I struggled to remember all of the notes, but I stood with knees knocking and finished the song.  The audience erupted into applause!

My mother was a classical piano teacher.  Many, many years later she confessed that she was completely embarrassed by how terrible my solo sounded!  Thank goodness she was encouraging enough not to tell me that at the time, or I would have ended up with an entirely different career.  (Happy Mother's Day to all of the supportive Moms!)

The New York Times survey found that 41% of the respondents listed "fear of public speaking" as their No. 1 fear, while 19% listed "death."

Music provides a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to conquer the fear of humiliation.  Congratulations to all of my brave students, present and former, who recently performed in the CMEA State Solo/Ensemble Festival and brought home awards. Great job!

And if you've ever stood up before a roomful of people, I acknowledge YOU for the courage you've mustered to risk public embarrassment and develop into the confident, self-expressed human being that you are.

I'm honored to nurture the growth of my music students, not only as musicians but as self-assured, contributing members of our community.  Click this link to find out more about the Private Music Lessons, Jazz Workshops and Performance Clinics that I offer. Enroll now for Summer Session!

Rare are the knocking knees and sweaty palms while I'm performing these days.  But even after 21 years of making my living as a professional musician, I notice that I must still rise to the occasion.   Performing for YOU makes it all worthwhile!

PS: Have you been wanting to be Removed from this list, but ever since that embarrassing moment in grade school you just can't raise your hand and make that request?  Be brave. Place your sweaty palms on the computer keyboard and click Reply.  Then take a deep breath, belt out a few choruses of "I Will Survive", and type in the Subject line, "um, uh, if you don't mind, maybe could you, I mean, I like you a lot but, ok.....Delete Me!" (whew)
